Preparing Data for Archiving
The long-term value of a data set can be greatly enhanced if the data files are designed from the start to make them easy to find, easy to organize, and easy to use. Early in the life of a project, this is often quite straightforward and requires little effort. Basic design considerations are illustrated using the Common Archive Object Model, a data model developed at the Canadian Astronomy Data Center as part of the Canadian Virtual Observatory program, but similar considerations will apply to any archived astronomical data.
